Each year Edwell continues to advance its mission of teaching underprivileged section of society. Through our education initiatives we have seen many lives changed for the better. In particular the Project Chauraha has enjoyed great success recently.

It was during our “Project Chauraha” (http://www.edwellsociety.org/chauraha.aspx ) where we had more interesting & interactive classes with the use of LCD projectors made presentations. We found IT beyond computers but as an enabler of social change and felt we need to think of an innovation like “Project Edhill” that can get rid of all sorts of barriers. IT enabled education can revolutionalise rural education. This will make a difference in the life of teachers and pupils.

Edwell’s Project Edhill would focus first on addressing this challenge in the hills of Uttarakhand state of INDIA, absorbing the bulk of children in hilly areas, and where parents in the absence of any better alternative education institution send children to the government funded schools which generally do not provide acceptable quality education.

Edwell’s Project Edhill is an initiative to enhance and promote quality learning at primary level of education through rich, student-centered, interactive multimedia based learning. Edhill has three objectives. First, it would evolve a sustainable & scalable system of education that ensures high quality on a mass scale, at a moderate cost, through interactive multimedia based learning. Second, it would develop institutional model and capability to run a large number of classes for poor hill children, and demonstrate the functioning of its approach in a credible manner. Third, having achieved first two objectives, it would promote large scale adoption of ‘Edhill’ approach through partnership with the governments and other stake holders.

To expand this program in the hills of Uttarakhand and help more needy children, we’ve been travelling & surveying the area since last one year (August 2009 – August 2010).




Project Edhill is an initiative in Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand to enhance and promote quality learning at primary level of education through rich, student-centered, interactive multimedia based learning. The basic goal is to use technology to improve the quality of education at Primary level.




The project will be implemented in pre identified village of Tehri Garhwal district in the state of Uttarakhand, India.(for location map

A study to know people’s perceptions & expectations from schooling in rural areas of Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand was undertaken. The idea of the study was to find out what people thought about education. So the obvious area of exploration was their definition of a good school and other questions along similar lines. In project Edhill we will use Multimedia to teach our children. Project Edhill covers Hindi, English, Mathematics & computers along with other activities. Our unique course design that has an interesting mix of rhymes, animation, puppetry and anecdotes, which is a complete departure from the established norms associated with child education. We correlate letters & mathematical numbers with day to day life objects. This enables kids for better conceptualization & memorization, a technique which is not being used by any other education institution in Uttarakhand.












The demand will be high as all the children would love computer based learning, an opportunity they consider critical. At the end of the one year project period, we expect the following outputs.

• 150 kids from Uttarakhand hills will get access to technology enabled primary education by 2011
• Learning will become more interactive; the teachers will use projector & laptop to project lessons to children, hence reaching out to many children. This will improve efficiency.
• Students will exhibit positive attitudes toward subjects like Mathematics & English.
• A renewed zeal for teaching among teachers.
